Carl Justi-Association for the Promotion of Art Historical Cooperation with Spain, Portugal and Ibero-America
The Carl Justi Association was founded in January 1989 in Marburg and was registered and recognized as a public interest association in the Register of Associations in May of the same year. Its headquarters are located in Dresden, and its governing bodies are the board of directors—made up of five people elected for a two-year term—and the General Assembly, which meets annually. The current members of the board are: Dr. Sylvaine Hänsel, Münster; Prof. Dr. Henrik Karge, Dresden; Prof. Dr. Joaquín Medina Warmburg, Karlsruhe; Prof. Dr. Miriam Oesterreich, Berlin/Hamburg; Prof. Dr. Michael Scholz-Hänsel, Leipzig.
The Carl Justi Association was founded with the aim of fostering cooperation of Germany with Spain and Portugal in the field of art history, as well as promoting the establishment of a German Institute of Art History in Madrid. Its fundamental purpose is to revive a field of German research that has been neglected for decades, and to facilitate the exchange of experiences between colleagues from Germany and abroad in the various disciplines dedicated to cultural history. Since its foundation in 1989, the Carl Justi Association has held several colloquiums in various German and Spanish university cities. This has revived scientific contact between Central Europe and the Iberian world, achieving international impact that has been extended to Latin America from around 2000.
The Association's review, entitled Mitteilungen der Carl Justi Vereinigung (Carl Justi Association Communications), edited by Barbara Borngässer and, since 1999, by Bettina Marten together with Sylvaine Hänsel since 2004, is published regularly and includes information on the Association's activities, conferences, exhibitions, and publications on Iberian or Ibero-American topics. All members of the Carl Justi Association receive the Bulletin free of charge.
After years of commendable work by Ralf Gottschlich, the association's website is now maintained by Henrik Karge, who has been compiling a bibliography of publications by members and, in future, also by international partners since the beginning of 2026, which is continuously updated.
In order to publish more extensive research, the Carl Justi Association has created a collection of scientific works under the name Ars Iberica et Americana, in collaboration with the Vervuert publishing house in Frankfurt/Main and Madrid. The editors are Barbara Borngässer, Henrik Karge, Margit Kern, Bruno Klein, and Joaquín Medina Warmburg.
